Nanaimo’s Southgate Mall is getting a facelift with a new place for shoppers to get fresh fish along with produce, meats and dried goods.
Ralph Quetschke, owner of Seadrift Fishmarket, has opened Riverside Fresh Food Market at Southgate Mall on Tenth Street.
The market provides the same fresh fish customers have become accustomed to from Seadrift in a market that provides a one stop shop.
“It’s an extension (of Seadrift) but they will also have meats here and produce,” says Quetschke of the market.
The market is part of a facelift the mall is getting to give it a fresh new look.
“We’re just trying to upgrade it and modernize it a bit,” says Giovanna Brownlee, property manager for Coal Harbour Realty that is in charge of the upgrade. “It’s probably long overdue. It was time for an upgrade.”
The mall is also getting another new tenant, Hearthstone Artisan Bakery, in the next few months. That leaves one vacancy available.
Quetschke opened the market in the former Salvation Army thrift store as he heard that customers in South Nanaimo were underserved.
Along with seafood, the market has a café for fish and chips and other seafood offerings, a wide variety of meats, cold cuts, sauces, cheese and dried goods like noodles.
“People have come to appreciate quality,” says Quetschke. “They need a place they can count on for their basics. Good quality food that tastes good, fruit that has flavor, steaks without antibiotics shoved into them.
Brownlee says the mall’s new tenants provide customers with a family feel and ‘good quality merchandise.”
She says they’ve noticed that people in Nanaimo do like personable family owned businesses with quality products.
Quetschke has more than 20 years experience as a butcher in Germany and his wife Christine is an experienced chef who looks after the deli in Seadrift and Riverside.
